For the first time in Hoffman Lewis’s storied history, the H|L softball team, Half-Loaded, made the Ad Club Softball League Playoffs. Or the ACSLP, for those of you keeping score at home. Under rookie head coach, Matt Kinsell, they were able to scrape together enough wins (and a league-record four ties out of twelve games) to qualify. The first playoff opponent, Rodgers-Townsend, suffered a devastating 12-1 defeat at the hands of H|L. The team valiantly fell in the second round matchup, succumbing by a score of 5-3 before heading directly to Babe’s Bar & Tavern to carb up and mentally prepare for next season.
There have been countless memorials for the gloved one, but none as heartfelt and timeless as the pinewood derby car created by H|L.
True, it was too heavy to race with the body in the casket, but it made a strong showing nonetheless. The car named “McCaully Coffin” won a single race at CoolFire Media’s annual event raising money the St. Louis Ad Club’s scholarship fund.
Lots of great cars showed up, but only one can be called the king of poppin’ out of the coffin.
